Reccho-seido is one of the most important and foundamental documents of the old Satsuma clan. "Syakugin-urimono-buai-narabini-syoshiki-nedan-sadame" is a part of "Reccho-seido vol. 58", and simply put, it is the control ordinance over prices, rates, and wages of various items in its character. The prices of 13 kinds of confections including "Karukan" are also listed in this document. So, it was attempted to measure the monetary value of "Karukan" and other confections in the Tenmei 5 (1785). The prices for 13 kinds of confections ("Karukan", "Yokan", "Koremochi", "Masarekan", "Kasutera" and others) were compared with the daily amount of wages for carpenter, plasterer, stonecutter which were listed in the same document. The daily amount of wages in the Tenmei 5 (1785) was further compared with that in these days. As a result of the comparison stated above, the monetary value of "Karukan" in those days turned out far more expensive than the authors expected. According to Haraguchi, the date of the document refered to prices of confections including "Karukan" is March of the Tenmei 6. But, the authors found that the correct date is December of the Tenmei 5. |
