The test methods and criteria to determine the flammability hazard classification of apparel fabrics were investigated. The flammability characteristics of (1) ease of ignition, (2) flame spread properties, (3) rate of heat transfer, (4) flame- driping properties and (5) surface flash burning were measured with a modified Mushroom Apparel Flammability Tester. 123 commercial fabrics have been examined. The burning behavior of these fabrics were characteristic of fiber composition, fabric construction and weight of each fabric. Fabric classification procedure was as follow's : 1) Each result of test methods was classified into Class 1,2,3 and 4 according to flammability criterion of each test. 2) Fabrics were classified as Grade A (lower hazard), B, C and D (higher hazard) according to criteria for the flammability hazard, consists of Classes in the tests for ease of ignition, flame spread properties and rate of heat transfer, and melting/flame-driping properties. The results of evaluation for various fabrics are likely to be comparatively reasonable in view of the burning behavior of these fabrics and probability of extensive burn injury. |
